Entry requirements
Bachelor of Science Degree in Military Studies or Bachelor's degree worth 180 credits, of which 90 credits are in War Studies or another related, relevant subject, such as International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Security Studies, Political Science, etc.
English proficiency equivalent to English B or English 6 is also required.

Course content and structure
This course aims to provide insight into the complex and multifaceted relationship between war and its surroundings. It addresses five areas of relevance to the fabric and structure of society: ethics and law; state and home; architecture and design; ecology and natural science; media; and tourism. Each component focuses on the mutually constitutive relationship between the area in question, its structures and trends, and war. For example: What is the relationship between architecture and warfare? What role do police logics play in war? What is the relationship between climate change and war? The course material includes analysis of warfare at strategic, operational and tactical levels.

Objectives
After completed course the student should be able to:
- Master theoretical approaches to the study of war and warfare that are relevant to the course, and be able to reason about their epistemological assumptions.
- Critically and systematically discuss strengths and weaknesses of the study of war/warfare through analysis of contemporary societal phenomena and structures.

Grading Scale: Fail, Pass, Pass with Distinction
Assessment takes place through active participation in mandatory seminars and the submission of a written assignment of 2,500 words(+/- 10%) at the end of the course.
Examinations submitted late will not be graded unless special circumstances exist and the examiner finds the reason acceptable.
The examiner may decide to allow supplementation in order for a passing grade to be achieved in the course. The supplementation shall be submitted no later than three working days after notification of the examination results and the decision on supplementation, unless special circumstances exist that are acceptable to the examiner.

Grades are set according to a three-grade scale: Pass with Distinction (VG), Pass (G) and Fail (U). Grading criteria are specified by no later than the start of the course.
To earn the grade Pass (G), the student must actively and constructively participate in mandatory seminars and earn a grade of Pass (P) on the written assignment.
To earn the grade Pass with Distinction (VG) in the course, the student must meet the requirements for Pass (G) and earn a grade of Pass with Distinction (VG) on the written assignment.

Transitional provisions
When the course is no longer given or when the course content has changed substantially, the student has the right to be examined once per semester during a three-term period in accordance with this syllabus.

The course is given as an elective course within the Master’s Programme in Politics and War, and may also be given as a freestanding course.
From autumn semester 2021, the course is included as an elective course within the Master's Programme in Politics, Security and War.
If a student has a decision from the Swedish Defence University regarding special educational support due to a disability, the examiner may decide on alternative forms of examination for the student.
On completion of the course, an evaluation will be conducted under the auspices of the course director and will serve as the basis for any changes to the course.
