PRESS RELEASE

Chair of NATO's Military Committee to attend NATO Youth Summit in Stockholm

The annual NATO Youth Summit, will be held this year in Stockholm and Miami. In Stockholm, 200 young people will gather to discuss current security policy challenges and NATO's role with civilian and military decision-makers. Among other things, they will have the opportunity to ask questions to NATO's highest-ranking military representatives.

Global security challenges, technology, innovation, and foreign influence are some of the topics that will be discussed during the NATO Youth Summit 2024. Together with Miami, Stockholm is hosting the summit this year, which engages young people between 18 and 35 years old. Youth will also participate digitally, and everything will be webcast. The programme starts at 11 AM in Stockholm.

During the summit, young people from several different European countries who have participated in the NATO Youth Summit Challenge will present ideas about the role of young people in global security challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions to today's decision-makers, including the Chair of NATO's Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer; Sweden’s Minister for Defence Pål Jonson; the State Secretary to the Minister for Civil Defence, Johan Berggren: the Vice-Chancellor of the Swedish Defence University Robert Egnell, and the Director General of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), Charlotte Petri Gornitzka.

"In one of the most serious security policy situations we have experienced in modern times in Europe and the USA, it is more crucial than ever that young people engage in security policy issues. The NATO Youth Summit provides such a platform, and as a fresh NATO member, it is especially important that Sweden hosts this NATO youth summit," says Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, Director General of MSB.

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency is organising the programme in Stockholm in cooperation with the Swedish Defence University. The programme is led by two students from the Swedish Defence University, Sarah Franzén and Carl Johan Skoog.

At 3 PM Swedish time, the webcast opens for Miami, where among others, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and several senior NATO officials will participate.

The NATO Youth Summit 2024 is a collaboration between NATO, Aspen Institute International Partners, Aspen Institute Romania, the Swedish Defence University, and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.
