Swedish support to the national movements in southern Africa 1960–1994

The PhD project examines the Swedish support to the national movements in southern Africa during the years 1960–1994.

Before 1960, Sweden went from not having a party in the parliament that actively pursued issues relating to Africa and with an extremely limited diplomatic presence on the continent – to becoming the most tenacious Western democracy in its support of the national movements

The dissertation project will analyse the support in relation to the policy of non-alignment in peacetime aiming at neutrality in the event of war and international law in order to investigate how a demarcation problem arose and was expressed in practice in Swedish aid and foreign policy
