Entry requirements

Admission to the Master’s programme in politics and war.

As stand-alone course: Officer’s commission/degree or Bachelor’s degree consisting of 180 credits, of which 90 must be in War Studies or an equivalent field.

Course content and structure

The reading course focuses on civil-military relations and studies the relationship between the political and military elites in different political systems. The course literature introduces and problematizes different civil-military theories and their application in real world settings regarding how the civil-military relationship can or should be organized in order to achieve both civilian control of the armed forces and military effectiveness. As such, the course encompasses literature that addresses the link between military professionalism and civilian control as well the impact of various control mechanisms on military effectiveness.

The course is mainly conducted through individual study but also includes 1-2 lectures and/or seminars.

Having finished the course the student will be able to:

  • Critically compare different theories of civil-military relations
  • Analyse and contrast central arguments and claims made in the civil-military discourse

Grading Scale: Fail, Pass, Pass with Distinction

The course is examined through an individual written assignment that is discussed at a final, mandatory seminar.

The examining teacher may decide on supplementary tasks in order for the student to achieve a passing grade (G). Active attendance at the final seminar is mandatory and absence cannot be compensated. A student who cannot participate will have to participate in the seminar the next time the course is given.

Late submissions are not accepted, except under certain medical or other compassionate circumstances that the examining teacher has sanctioned beforehand. The student must complete any supplementary tasks within three days of its announcement, except under circumstances that the examining teacher has sanctioned beforehand.

Grading
Grading is done according to a three-tiered scale: Pass with distinction (VG), Pass(G), and Fail (U).

In order to achieve a Pass with distinction (VG) on the course, the student hasto have participated actively and constructively in the mandatory seminars, and receive a Pass with distinction (VG) on the individually written paper.

Restrictions in Number of Examinations
The number of examinationsis not limited.

Transitional provisions

When the course is no longer given or when the course content has changed substantially, the student has the right to be examined once per semester during a three-term period in accordance with this syllabus.

Other regulations

The course cannot be included in a degree with another course whose content fully or partially corresponds to the content of this course.

The course is given as a part of the Master’s programme in Politics and War.

The language of instruction is English.

This course cannot, within the Master’s programme in Politics and War, be combined with the following courses: Civil-Military Relations 7.5 credits (Civil-militära relationer), and Creating and Organizing Military Power 15 credits (Skapa och organisera militär makt).

The course convenor will arrange for the course to be evaluated after its conclusion. The evaluation forms the basis for eventual changes to the course.
