The Future of Peace Operations and Military Interventions

Future of peace operations and military interventions. November 29 2023

Welcome to a symposium on the Future of Peace Operations and Military Interventions.

The Civil Wars and Military Interventions Research Group (CWAMI) at the Swedish Defence University welcomes you to a symposium on the Future of Peace Operations and Military Interventions, with national and international scholars and practitioners.

Last year, 64 multilateral peace operations were conducted in 38 countries around the world. This was the largest number of operations in a single year in over a decade. At the same time, some of the largest UN peace operations are winding down, international competition is increasing, and the security situation in our neighbourhood is deteriorating. Private military companies, such as the Wagner Group and the DAG, are supporting state and non-state armed forces, and regional organisations, such as the AU and ECOWAS, are stepping up their military efforts in parts of the world.

  • How does these changes influence the role of peace operations and military interventions today and tomorrow?
  • What are the main challenges?
  • What role does the Nordic countries have in these interventions?

The symposium gathers leading experts on peace operations and military interventions from the Nordic countries, who will share their insights about the ongoing developments and challenges of peace operations and military interventions in an area of heightened international competition and war in Europe.
