Officer training

The most important task of the Swedish Defence University is to provide officer training at different levels. The Officer's Programme (OP) is our largest programme at the undergraduate level and the Joint Advanced Command and Staff Programme (HOP) is our largest programme at the advanced level.

The officer training programmes at the Swedish Defence University are academic programmes. The Officers' Programme leads to an Officer's Degree, which is a vocational qualification of a bachelor's degree. The Joint Advanced Command and Staff Programme leads to a Master's degree.

The Officers' Programme

The officers' programme, with three specialisations, constitutes the largest part of the Swedish Defence University's appropriation-funded education. The Officers' Programme is a three-year higher education programme that leads to an officer's degree – a first-cycle university degree. You do not need to take out a student loan, but get free food and accommodation with several benefits from the Armed Forces.

The Joint Advanced Command and Staff Programme

On behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces, we also conduct a higher education for officers, the Joint Advanced Command and Staff Programme (HOP). The training takes place on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces, which also determines the focus of your degree even before you are admitted. You cannot apply for the Joint Advanced Command and Staff Programme yourself, but the selection is made by the Swedish Armed Forces. The programme leads to a master's degree in war studies, depending on whether you study one (HOP1) or two years (HOP12).
